The TBR Tag

This tag is about all the books on my to be read list and it was created by Rachel and Dana!

1. How do you keep track of your tbr pile?

Well, the thing about that is that I don’t, and it’s not a pile so much as just the vast majority of the books on my shelves. I just yeet whatever I feel like reading off the shelf basically.

2. Is your tbr mostly print or ebook?

Print because I only read ebooks when I travel.

3. A book that has been on your tbr list the longest

I mean technically I have books from the Scholastic Book Fair™ that I haven’t read, so all of those I guess.

4. A book you recently added to your tbr

I really want to read The Wicked King by Holly Black since I just finished the first in the series, The Cruel Prince.

5. A book in your tbr strictly because of its beautiful cover

I’m actually pretty good about not judging books by their covers, but I gotta say that Nimona has a nice cover.

Nimona - Wikipedia

6. A book on your tbr that you never plan on reading

I don’t really understand this question? If I don’t plan on reading a book I take it off of the tbr.

7. An unpublished book on your tbr that you’re excited for

The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue by VE Schwab!

8. A book on your tbr that everyone has read but you

The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas! I’ve gotta get on it and read that bad boy!

9. A book on your tbr that everyone recommends to you

The Mark of Athena by Rick Riordan. Everyone keeps telling me to finish the series and they’re RIGHT! I need to.

10. A book on your tbr that you’re dying to read

The Gentleman’s Guide to Vice and Virtue by Mackenzie Lee. I’ve been wanting to read this for soooo long and I can’t wait any longer!

11. How many books are on your Goodreads tbr shelf?

363! I recently cut it down and got rid of the ones I didn’t actually care about reading.

So there you have it friends! All the burning questions about the random stuff I wanna read are now answered.

Question of the day: How do you organize the books you want to read?

top five wednesday- independent ladies

So this week’s Top-Five Wednesday prompt is to list five of your favorite independent ladies, or those who either didn’t have a romance or didn’t get distracted from their goal because of their romance. So, tbh I feel like this could apply to most people in a healthy relationship (like seriously people don’t give up your dreams because you have a lover now).

1. Kate Harker from Monsters of Verity

Series Review: Monsters of Verity duology by Victoria Schwab

Her romance was barely even there, and a lot of her strength came from friendships and iron willpower. There were a lot of well developed characters in these books, and that’s one of the reasons I like them so much!

2. Cameron from the Miseducation of Cameron Post

Cowardly DE school board cancels entire summer reading ...

I like this book because of its portrayal of finding strength as a young lgbt person without needing a romance to validate it. Cameron faces romance and heartbreak, but in the end she is strong because of her friends and because of herself.

3. Hermione from Exit, Pursued by a Bear

Jacqueline West – Ciao Bella!

So this book is dark based on subject material but surprisingly uplifting, and so I’m proud of her for relying on her friends and family, and for not depending on validation from a lover.

4. Mia from Little Fires Everywhere

Kayla LaFata Weatherman – Home in NYC. Roots in Michigan ...

This book killed it and it was great, and Mia was the icon I didn’t know I needed. She did her art and raised her daughter on her own and still had compassion when other people did want romantic love.

5. Starr from The Hate U Give

The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas

Starr had a big romance, but it didn’t affect her life, and her goals or anything like that, and I’m happy about that. This book is so amazing for so many bigger reasons, and this aspect to her character just adds a little something.

Cool thanks for reading.

January Wrap-up!

January was the first month I’d read any books for fun since August, and somehow I ended up reading 10! This month, I finished five regular novels and five graphic novels!

Starting off with the Regular Books:

The first book I read was A Winter’s Promise by Christelle Dabos and translated by Hildegarde Sirle. This book took me a long time to get through, but I throughly enjoyed the process of reading. I had a lot of praises and few criticisms. However, the more time that has passed since I read this book, the more annoyed I became. A lot of annoying things in the book I remember (like Ophelia constantly being a wimp despite supposedly having an iron will), and fewer of the things I liked (the characters may have been well developed, but man were they terrible people). I think that this book was incredibly well written despite this, and that it just may not be for everyone. I do want to continue with the series, once the rest come out in English.

Sara (The United Kingdom)’s review of The Cruel Prince

The next book I read was The Cruel Prince by Holly Black. I actually read this for a book club on instagram, and I was happy to do so because it had been on my tbr for a long time. I had heard a lot of hype surrounding this book, and luckily I really enjoyed it! It was the kind of book that I just kept wanting to read to see what was going to happen next, and it was exciting all the way through. There were some points I wasn’t as fond of (like a romance between two specific characters…….) but overall I liked how flawed and messed up everybody was: the protagonist, the antagonist, everyone you meet. I recommend this book and am super excited to read the sequel!

This was one of those books that all the cool kids in fourth grade were reading and I wanted to read too, but couldn’t figure out how to find at the library. So, I just decided to read it at the ripe old age of 18. I enjoyed it, and thought that it was well written despite the discrepancy between me and the intended audience. I do think I would have liked it more as a younger kid, but am glad I read it anyways.

The Year of the Rat by Grace Lin — Reviews, Discussion ...

I wanted to read The Year of the Rat because the author, Grace Lin, wrote my favorite book of my childhood and my life: Where the Mountain Meets the Moon. Year of the Rat is somewhat autobiographical, which I like, and it was cool to read. It’s also meant for a somewhat younger audience, and while I really did enjoy it I think that younger people would enjoy it even more. This is also a very important book, because it has lots of representation for different kids that may read it.

On a very, very different note, we have Girls of Paper and Fire by Natasha Ngan. This book deals with abuse (mental, physical, and sexual) in a fantasy setting. It became gruesome fast and often, so major content warning for that. That being said, I think that all of the details and emotions are what makes this book so important. The message and characters are well developed and I feel deeply for them. The issues that I have with this book tend to have more to do with book mechanics than anything deeper (a couple of plot points seemed slightly illogical and I would have preferred the book to be told through Wren’s perspective). Everything deeper than that was very well done, and I think this book is so, so important for the topics it deals with.

Graphic Novels I Read This Month:

I read graphic novels from two series, so I’m just going to talk about each series together.

Catch-Up - Avatar The Last Airbender: The Promise

The show Avatar: The Last Airbender has a bunch of graphic novel trilogies that have come out now, so I thought I’d read the first trilogy (The Promise). The books are short, even for comics, and it didn’t feel like a trilogy as much as three chapters in one short book. They were a lot of fun, and I can’t say too much without spoiling the show, but the ~vibe~ is similar to the original series and I’m glad I read them!

Watch Your Lie in April Online at Hulu

I also read the first two manga volumes of Your Lie in April by Naoshi Arakawa. I want to watch the anime at some point, but I don’t know if I should finish reading the series first or not. I heard the ending was sad, but I still want to read and watch it! The first two were nice, and actually pretty inspiring, so we’ll see how it goes.

And there you have it folks! All the books I finished in the month of January 2019! I hope February will be even better! 🙂

Question of the Day: What did you read in January?

Top Five Wednesday! 2/6/2019

Today’s prompt is to list five of your most nostalgic ships, as in the ships you liked in your younger youth. The only problem is that I have never been a big shipping type person, so I doubt that I could come up with five. So, I’m just going to list five that were popular a while ago and my thoughts on them at the time.

1. Ron and Hermione from Harry Potter

I high-key hated it. First of all, I didn’t like Ron at all, and I liked Hermione too much. So basically I was mad that people were putting her with him, when she obviously deserved better.

2. Tris and Tobias from Divergent

Now we’re really bringing out the old ones! I remember how romantic everyone thought they were and I kept seeing edits of them being together on the internet. But I didn’t like them together because I thought Tobias was mean and I didn’t like him.

3. Luna and Neville from also Harry Potter

I didn’t like this one either for reasons you may already be able to guess: Neville got on my NERVES and Luna was a babe all the way through, so I really didn’t see it.

4. Stargirl and Leo from Stargirl

I actually liked this one. It was cute and they were both good and decent human beings.

5. Harry and Luna from Harry Potter

Now THIS was one I could get behind! I liked both characters, and they seemed to actually like each other?!?!? It was meant to be.

Please don’t take this too seriously, it’s only a Top Five Wednesday Post that I inverted because I’m a party pooper.

Question of the day: What is your favorite book that you read back in the day?

The Cruel Prince Playlist

I recently read The Cruel Prince by Holly Black for a book club, and I thought it was great! Here are some bops that remind me of it. Also, spoiler warning for The Cruel Prince.

1. Ready for it by Taylor Swift

This song gives me super Jude vibes, it gives me the same feeling as Jude when she figured out her plan to upset the entire Fairy world order.

2. Waiting from The Band’s Visit

This one reminds me more of Jude in the beginning of the book, when she only wants things she thinks are impossible. She only wants to become a knight to stop the bullies and feel like she belongs, but still feels like that could never happen.

3. Baby One More Time by Britney Spears

This kind of feels like Taryn and Locke’s relationship, and how she still stays with him even when he does bad things.

4. Me and the Sky from Come from Away

The part of the book when Jude shocks Madoc at what she is able to do (despite being a human and part of his household) is similar, I think, to the perspective about being an female pilot in this song when it was a rarity.

5. Creation by The Pierces

This gives me big Court of Shadows vibes and I feel like this could be in a training montage with them.

6. Dust and Ashes from Natasha, Pierre, and the Great Comet of 1812

This gives me vibes similar to the beginning of the book when Jude and Taryn almost die at the hands of Cardan’s friends.

7. Holy by PVRIS

The idea that the fairies think they are better than the humans matches the sentiment of this song; they think they’re holy when they’re not.

8. Untouchable by Taylor Swift

Cardan’s friends thought they were untouchable. ‘Nuff said.

9. Primadonna by Marina and the Diamonds

This song gives me big Cardan vibes, especially in the beginning of the book when he seems like just an entitled prince. At the end, you see that he’s many other things as well as an entitled prince!

10. When the Chips are Down from Hadestown

This also reminds me of Jude’s desperation to get power and personal security at high cost.

11. Journey to the Past from Anastasia

Actually, this one reminds me of Vivienne. The entire way through the book, she wants to return to the human world (fulfilling her promise to always hate Madoc), and return to her human past despite any fear that she has.

12. Time is Up by Poppy

The spookiness of the song reminds me of the climax of the book.

I hope you enjoyed this list! Let me know if you agree or disagree in the comments below!

Top Five Wednesday- Freebie!

So today’s prompt is a freebie, so I’m going to go back in time and do the prompt from November 23rd 2016: books I want to re-read!

1. Where the Mountain Meets the Moon by Grace Lin

I’ve read this a ton of times; it is my favorite book, and I would love to read it again.

2. Six of Crows by Leigh Bardugo

I took a long time to finish this book the first time, but I think if I read it again I might finish it faster and get more out of it. I loved it the first time, but I want to re-read it so I can read the sequel in the right mindset.

3. The Diviners by Libba Bray

In the same vein of Six of Crows, this book is massive and complex, and I feel like reading it multiple times will let me get more out of it before I continue with the series.

4. The Smell of Other People’s Houses by Bonnie Sue Hitchcock

This book was a complete surprise when I read it initially, and I thought it was a beautiful story. I want to experience it again!

5. Ash by Malinda Lo

I read this a long time ago and loved it; I’m curious to see what I would think now. I hope I love it again.

Question of the Day: What book could you read over and over?

Top Five Wednesday-Top of Your TBR!

This week’s Top Five Wednesday prompt is the top five books on your tbr, so I’m going to go through them 🙂

1. Lost Voices by Sarah Porter

This one I have wanted to read ever since reading her other book Vassa in the Night, and I have it out from the library right now, so I might as well read it before I have to return it.

2. Strange the Dreamer by Laini Taylor

I actually just got this from a used book store, and now it is the group book for my team on the Booktube Games, so I’ll be reading it the first week of February!

3. Illuminae by Amie Kaufman and Jay Kristoff

I’m doing the Read Harder challenge from Book Riot this year, and one of the prompts is to read an epistolary novel (novel made up out of documents of some sort) and I had this one on my shelf, so I thought this would be a good opportunity to read it!

4. How the Garcia Girls Lost Their Accents by Julia Alvarez

I’ve wanted to read this since I read In the Time of the Butterflies by the same author, and don’t know when I am going to be able to read it, but hope that that time will be soon!

5. The Palace of Illusions by Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni

I’ve heard great things about this one and am excited to learn more about the Mahābhārata, which seems like one of those stories that really deserves more recognition and representation.

We’ll see how I do with reading these, hopefully by this time next month I will have read them all!

Question of the Day: What is the next book you plan on reading?
